Women Empowerment

The Problem

Why This Matters

Despite constitutional guarantees, women in rural Uttar Pradesh face systemic oppression. Only 22% of women in UP participate in the workforce — one of the lowest rates globally. Domestic violence affects 1 in 3 women, but less than 14% report incidents to authorities due to fear, shame, and economic dependence. In Varanasi district, 40% of girls are married before turning 18.

Financial exclusion is severe: while 80% of rural women have Jan Dhan accounts, most remain dormant or are controlled by male family members. Less than 5% of rural women own land in their own name. Without economic independence, women have no bargaining power in household decisions — from children's education to their own healthcare.

Widow abandonment is a tragic reality in Varanasi — thousands of widows from across India come to the ghats, abandoned by families, surviving on ₹50-100/day from temple alms. They have no shelter, no healthcare, and no dignity.
Crisis that demands action

This is not a statistics problem — it's real people, real families, suffering every single day in our own communities.

Government Initiatives
Government schemes like Mahila Shakti Kendra, Beti Bachao Beti Padhao, Ujjwala Yojana, and Mahila Samridhi Yojana exist but lack last-mile delivery. Most women in rural areas don't know these schemes exist — 70% of eligible women have never heard of Mahila Shakti Kendra. One-Stop Centres (Sakhi Centres) for violence survivors operate only in district headquarters, not in villages. Skill training under Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana reaches less than 8% of rural women.

Government Efforts

What's Being Done — and What's Missing

While the government has launched several important schemes and policies, the gap between policy and implementation remains wide. Bureaucratic delays, low awareness, corruption, and poor infrastructure mean that benefits often don't reach the people who need them most.

This is where NGOs fill the gap

We bridge the gap between government schemes and the people who need them — through direct service delivery, awareness, and hand-holding support.
