Disaster Relief

The Problem

Why This Matters

India has 2.68 crore persons with disabilities (Census 2011, likely much higher now). In rural UP, disability is still seen as a "curse" or "punishment from God" — children with disabilities are hidden inside homes, denied education, socialization, and medical care. Only 45% of children with disabilities attend school, and less than 5% complete secondary education.

Access to assistive devices is shockingly poor: 80% of people needing wheelchairs, hearing aids, prosthetic limbs, or crutches in rural India cannot afford or access them. Government disability certificates — essential for accessing schemes and reservations — require visits to district hospitals with specialist committees that meet only monthly. For a wheelchair-bound person in a remote village, this journey is almost impossible.

Employment discrimination is rampant: only 36% of working-age persons with disabilities have employment, and most are in informal, low-paying, precarious work. Accessibility infrastructure (ramps, accessible toilets, sign language interpreters) is virtually absent in rural India.
Crisis that demands action

This is not a statistics problem — it's real people, real families, suffering every single day in our own communities.

Government Initiatives
Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act 2016 mandates 4% reservation in government jobs and education, but enforcement is weak — 80% of reserved positions remain unfilled. ADIP Scheme provides free assistive devices through camps but waiting lists are months long. Deendayal Disabled Rehabilitation Scheme funds NGOs for rehabilitation services but coverage reaches less than 10% of eligible persons. Accessible India Campaign (Sugamya Bharat) focuses on urban infrastructure, rural areas remain completely inaccessible.

Government Efforts

What's Being Done — and What's Missing

While the government has launched several important schemes and policies, the gap between policy and implementation remains wide. Bureaucratic delays, low awareness, corruption, and poor infrastructure mean that benefits often don't reach the people who need them most.

This is where NGOs fill the gap

We bridge the gap between government schemes and the people who need them — through direct service delivery, awareness, and hand-holding support.
