India has only 1 government doctor per 10,189 people — far below the WHO recommendation of 1:1,000. In rural Uttar Pradesh, the situation is worse: districts like Chandauli and Jaunpur have less than 1 doctor per 25,000 people. Primary Health Centers (PHCs) are understaffed, under-equipped, and often closed. Families must travel 30-50 km to reach a district hospital, spending ₹500-2,000 just on transport.

The result: preventable diseases kill thousands. Malaria, typhoid, dengue, and tuberculosis claim lives simply because people cannot access or afford treatment. Maternal mortality in rural UP (197 per 100,000 births) is three times the national average. Malnutrition affects 46% of children under 5 in UP — every other child you see is stunted or underweight. Diabetes, hypertension, and heart disease are rising rapidly but go undetected because families never see a doctor until it's too late.

Mental health is an invisible crisis — less than 0.3 psychiatrists per 100,000 people in rural India, and deep stigma prevents families from seeking help even when support exists.
