Elderly Care

The Problem

Why This Matters

India's elderly population (60+) has crossed 14 crore and will reach 30 crore by 2050. Yet our social security system barely exists — only 30% of elderly receive any pension (average ₹200-500/month). In rural UP, many elderly are abandoned by their children after property disputes or are simply left behind when families migrate to cities for work.

Varanasi has a unique problem: thousands of elderly widows from across India come here to "die by the Ganga" — abandoned by families, they survive on temple alms of ₹5-10/day. They lack shelter, food, medicine, clothing, and human connection. Many suffer from chronic diseases — 70% of elderly in rural India have at least one chronic condition (diabetes, hypertension, arthritis, cataracts) — but cannot afford treatment.

Loneliness is a silent killer: studies show isolated elderly have 26% higher mortality risk. Depression affects 20-30% of elderly in India, but mental health services for seniors are virtually non-existent in rural areas.
Crisis that demands action

This is not a statistics problem — it's real people, real families, suffering every single day in our own communities.

Government Initiatives
Indira Gandhi National Old Age Pension provides ₹200-500/month (₹7-17/day!) — barely enough for one meal. National Programme for Health Care of the Elderly (NPHCE) exists on paper but geriatric clinics operate only in district hospitals. Integrated Programme for Older Persons funds NGOs but the budget is negligible — ₹100 crore for 14 crore elderly. Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act 2007 allows elderly to claim maintenance from children, but legal processes are slow and inaccessible.

Government Efforts

What's Being Done — and What's Missing

While the government has launched several important schemes and policies, the gap between policy and implementation remains wide. Bureaucratic delays, low awareness, corruption, and poor infrastructure mean that benefits often don't reach the people who need them most.

This is where NGOs fill the gap

We bridge the gap between government schemes and the people who need them — through direct service delivery, awareness, and hand-holding support.
